The star has given the full amount of his £25,000 Mercury Prize winnings to the Music Venues Trust, which works to protect the Britain's grassroots concert spaces.

Fender was given the prize on 16 October as his latest record the album was declared the top album of the past year.

Fender has opted to donate the funds to the trust, in appreciation of the crucial part small stages played in his early career.

"I would not have achieved this success if it hadn't been for all the gigs I did around the area, and beyond, when I was just getting going," remarked the artist. "These locations are legendary, but they are facing challenges."

Since the start of 2023, more than 150 of these locations have ceased operations – about 16 percent of the entire UK sector.

Over the past year, top acts like Pulp, Coldplay, Katy Perry and Ed Sheeran have all supported the trust in its efforts to help venues survive, by adding a minor surcharge to their admission fees, which goes to help independent venues.

Fender also joined in, raising in excess of £100,000 on his recent tour to help thirty-eight local spots across England, Scotland, and Wales.

The donation helped locations that were confronting potential shutdown due to difficulties caused by flooding, blazes and family tragedies, as well as licensing issues, court cases and sound issues.

Some locations received funding support in upgrading amenities and technical equipment that positively impacted musicians and fans.

"The idea that revenue from concerts in large arenas supports the smaller venues, where it kicks off for musicians like me, is just logical," Sam Fender has said.

Fender is far from the only musician to donate his Mercury Prize winnings to charitable organizations.

In they earned the prize in the mid-90s for their record Different Class, frontman Cocker announced that the group would contribute their prize money to the organization War Child.

During 2002, rapper and singer she divided her award between several good causes, like the NSPCC and a charity for Sickle Cell.

"And I contributed a thousand pounds to the center, to their gymnastics program, because I trained in gymnastics when I was younger and they required new equipment," she shared with the media.

In recent years, Ezra Collective gave their winnings to the local youth club that developed their band, in addition to other local music groups.

Also 1994 winners M People donated their winnings to a MS organization after a close contact was diagnosed the condition.

"Winning was ample," remarked artist Heather Small. "The cash was the cherry on top but we didn't require the extra, because we had the honor. So our victory impacted somebody else's life."

In the past week, the trust shared it had protected two local spots in the South East, by placing them under public stewardship.

The first in that area and the other in that location were acquired under the community ownership scheme, which is backed by the arts council and enthusiasts who acquire "ownership units" in the buildings.
