Micky van de Ven scored twice as Tottenham prolonged their winning streak in away games in the Premier League and delivered the Toffees their initial loss at Hill Dickinson Stadium.

The Toffees were unbeaten in their five previous fixtures at their recently opened stadium at Bramley-Moore Dock, having left their historic home behind after more than a century at the end of the previous campaign.

But Tottenham's leader Van de Ven struck on two occasions from set-pieces in the opening 45 minutes to put their strong form at jeopardy, and they were unable to turn it around before the midfielder - assisted by former Toffees attacker the Brazilian - headed home a third to seal the victory.

The Everton defender thought he had levelled the tally five minutes after the defender's opener, directing a bullet header past Guglielmo Vicario from an Everton corner.

The Portuguese striker, meanwhile, missed a number of chances, while Vicario made a succession of fine saves to ensure Tottenham went five matches on the road unbeaten in the Premier League.

But the video assistant referee intervened, advising the match official to check the score on the pitchside monitor and the referee ruled that Jack Grealish and Iliman Ndiaye were in an illegal position and had interfered with the Spurs keeper.

This victory elevates the manager's team into third place in the division, five points off local foes and leaders the Gunners.

The Merseyside club stay in 14th position and are six points clear of the relegation zone.

Spurs breakdown: The defender fulfils duties at each end of pitch

Following a drab weekday display in the European competition against Monaco, where they managed a mere two shots on goal, Frank opted for Randal Kolo Muani up front instead of former Toffees player the Brazilian.

The summer signing was failed to influence the game before being replaced for the substitute after 60 minutes on the field, but it turns out he proved unnecessary in the end.

Centre-back Van de Ven transformed into an attacking force to be reckoned with.

Spurs' opening strike came from a cleverly executed corner routine, with the midfielder heading the ball back across the six-yard box for an unmarked Van de Ven to score.

And the captain - filling in as captain in the Argentine's unavailability - added his second in added time as he rose above the England keeper to head home.

The Dutchman was equally impressive in defence, partnering effectively with his defensive colleague as the pair handled superbly with the numerous deliveries thrown their way by the opposition.

Toffees breakdown: Everton missing finishing touch

Everton's recent stadium had been a fortress, but it appears the novelty may have worn off somewhat and fans flocked to the exits after the midfielder's third for Spurs.

The break in Everton's winning streak at home won't be a massive worry for David Moyes, but their striker situation will be.

The forward and the other striker - the Toffees' pair of established centre-forwards - had scored only a single goal between them before Sunday's match.

And they were unable to contribute to that poor tally on a wet and gloomy evening on in Liverpool.

The striker's performance was summed up when he chose to bicycle-kick a golden opportunity from close range, even with having room and time to reposition for a simpler attempt that would have tested Vicario.

The substitute, too, was unable to influence the game after coming on for the starter in the second half.

It wasn't for a lack of opportunity. The majority of the home side's attacks came through the winger and Ndiaye, who tirelessly delivered threatening balls into the Tottenham penalty area.
